The Revolution of Social Media Network: New World

Social media network is the most in trend topic to be discussed currently. It continues to evolve and its uses change and expand. Wikipedia defines Social media as “media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.”

When I first started using social media, it a few years back when my friends in school keep talking about it. When I enter higher education programme around 2007, I thought this is a must have thing in order for me to communicate with my friends. As I remember, the first social media account that I had registered is Friendster. At that time, it was quite popular among friends at my age. I start to mingle around and socialize with schoolmates and not to mention getting to know new friends from all over the world. After a while, Friendster is no longer a place where my friends and I meet virtually. It has change to other social portal like Tagged and then come along Facebook.  That is a summary of self-experience with social media network.

Boyd (2007) argues, “What makes social network sites unique is not that they allow individuals to meet strangers, but rather that they enable users to articulate and make visible their social networks.” Social network sites have also began the process of transcending the framework we have been used to in terms of time and space. People no longer need to wait for the daily TV news or “tomorrow's paper”.

"We wanted flying cars, instead we got 140 characters." - Peter Thiel

We live in an age of rapid change. Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and many other innovators have changed how we work, communicate and live. Twenty-some years ago, a large bookstore might have had 100,000 books available. Today online retailers (e.g., Amazon) have millions of books to sell. Similarly, there were no smartphones two decades ago--just simple mobile phones and land lines. Social media then consisted of email and listservs; now we have Facebook and Twitter. A 1990s personal computer had only basic capabilities (word processing, spreadsheets, and a few others). Now an iMac has the power of an earlier generation's supercomputer (Strauss, 2012).

The internet was the result of some visionary thinking by people in the early 1960s, who saw great political value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in different fields (Utpal, 2012). But today user of the internet has gone beyond its limits. It provides a virtual platform in which different social groups can produce a pressure that might have been observed denied. Social networking sites are becoming part of our lives and it is affecting public. It opens up a two way discourse, allowing for organic, leaderless movements to reset zeitgeists (Michael, 2011).

Several moments came in the social networking sites that change the world. It has altered global society even more than information but to connect with one another. Several advantages and disadvantages of social media network are listed as below (Cosmato, 2013).

Advantages:

  • Worldwide connectivity.
  • Commonality of interest.
  • Real-time information sharing.
  • Free advertising.
  • Increased news cycle speed.
Disadvantages:

  • Face to face connections are endangered.
  • Cyber bullying and crimes against children.
  • Risks of fraud or identity theft.
  • Time waster.
  • Corporate invasion of privacy.
